One of the virtues of urban living is that work and so many daily necessities can be met within easy walking or riding distance. This saves time and transportation costs as well as being a more personal and environmentally friendly way to live.
Unfortunately many large national retailers prefer building megastores in suburban settings where building is less expensive and labor costs per volume of sales usually lower. This practice is sufficiently longstanding that their equipment and operations inhibit them from meeting urban needs.
As a result urban dwellers who would prefer to do business locally are often forced to the suburbs to obtain what they want. Urban retail corriders have declined. Wealth leaves the community rather than being recycled. A negative dynamic is created and the community looks as if it is in decline though the community generates wealth.
Community leaders and Economic Development Corporations are, with varying degrees of success, reversing this trend. Succeeding is important to urban, suburban, and rural residents equally. Each setting has it's advantages and disadvantages but stability and the ability to live well in any setting benefits all.
The residents of Columbia Heights are looking foward to the completion of their subway stop. There is public land adjacent to the stop that with co-operative and enlightened actions can create a renewed urban center.
