Five men were shot dead — two fatally — in Washington, DC, on Wednesday afternoon, police said.
The shooting was reported at the corner of O Street NW and North Capitol Street, just north of New York Avenue in the Truxton Circle neighborhood.
DC Police officers and DC Fire & EMS were called to the area to report several people shot dead. Units arrived just after 12:45 p.m. and found several people shot dead in the street.
Two men were pronounced dead at the scene and three men took themselves to the hospital.
The scene is on a lively block of the neighborhood near the So Others Might Eat homeless aid program and a bilingual charter school. The parents could be seen picking up the students around 2pm
Executive Assistant Chief Ashawn Benedict described the area as an “open-air drug market” that police routinely patrol.
Police cordoned off the area while they investigated. It wasn’t immediately known if they had a suspect.
Several streets were closed around the scene, police said: First Street NW between O and P streets and the 1300 block of N. Capital Street. Metro buses will be diverted until further notice.
There was no word on what might have led to the shooting.
Another fatal shooting happened overnight about half a block away.
In that incident, a 25-year-old man died and a woman was injured at Florida Avenue and N. Capitol Street. It was not known if these shootings could be related.
According to the Metropolitan Police Department, 136 people have died in homicides in the district so far this year, compared to 131 people at this time last year. Overall, violent crime has increased by 2% and assaults with a dangerous weapon have decreased by 11%.
