Biden, White House now ‘pissed’ at media coverage, NBC blog reports

NBC News’ Mike Memoli appeared to acknowledge in a blog post on Tuesday that the White House has become more concerned about press coverage of late.

Memoli wrote how the president and his administration had grown increasingly frustrated with reporters and their reporting, citing when President Biden complained publicly when questions were shouted at him.

“They’re among the only media outlets in the world that do that. Seriously, seriously,” Biden scolded reporters while being escorted out of a White House abortion task force meeting.

Memoli wrote: “President Joe Biden’s press team has made no secret of their frustration at how their boss is covered. And lately, the president is venting that frustration himself.”

The NBC journalist also highlighted a quote from White House communications director Kate Bedingfield, who similarly vented frustrations against the press for pushing negative coverage of the president.

“There was a fundamental disbelief, particularly among the DC, the East Coast press corps, in Biden’s vision, in his strategy, in his tactics, in his ability to do the things he said he would do” , said Bedingfield. “There are tons of headlines and tweets from reporters declaring his agenda dead, that he’s outdated, that he’s out of touch with where the country is. And what has happened is that we have put together a historically successful legislative package with achievements that have exceeded those expectations.”

Memoli added, “Biden shares the view of some of his closest advisers day in and day out that the press corps just doesn’t ‘get’ him and won’t give him a fair jerk. But Biden didn’t exactly note that Bedingfield was stiffly arming the mainstream press. He just deals with them in a completely different way than his predecessors.

Although Memoli acknowledged that Biden conducted far fewer interviews than President Obama over a two-year period in office, he claimed Biden still held “326 informal question-and-answer sessions with reporters” because he had a less traditional relationship with the have press.

“The bottom line of this White House is that there are diminishing returns to engaging in more traditional press interactions with members of the Washington press corps who they say are ‘fundamentally skeptical’ of Biden’s performance. Beyond some of the more non-traditional formats to put Biden out there, the White House has prioritized using members of his cabinet and senior staff to conduct interviews with the local and regional press,” Memoli wrote.

Biden has frequently criticized the press for presenting a “negative” view of his administration and avoided seated interviews. Some of his critics point out that at press conferences, the President often has a predetermined roster of reporters and often leaves press conferences without answering questions.
