According to a press release from the United States Parks Police, a 44-year-old man from Bloomington is suspected of vandalizing the Washington Monument in Washington DC at 7:30 p.m. on September 20, 2022.
According to the press release, Shaun Ray Deaton, 44, of Bloomington, Indiana, was arrested after allegedly using paint to vandalize the outer base of the Washington Monument. Park Police say Deaton has been charged with trespassing, tampering and vandalism (36 CFR2.31). More charges could be on the way.
The press release said that National Park Service restorers have begun removing the paint.
Charges of crimes on federal property are automatically crimes.
