GAINESVILLE, Fla. — The third-ranked Florida State softball team (35-2) defeated the No. 6 Florida Gators (30-6) 4-2 in 10 innings Wednesday night.
The Seminoles went undefeated against ranked teams with their seventh win of the season.
It was the Noles’ fifth win over the Gators in nine outings.
The Gators batted first in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead.
Kendra Falby reached base after a throwing error on the Seminole defense. Two batters later, she scored from second position after Hannah Adams singled the middle.
Florida State tied it up in the fourth inning and hit a two-hit run.
Mack Leonard led into midfield with a single. D’Aun Riggs came on the pinch run and immediately stole second base. Devyn Flaherty then drove Riggs home with a one-out single down the middle.
UF reclaimed the lead at the bottom of fifth place, scoring just one run for four.
A leadoff single and a stolen base brought a runner to second base for Leonard, who had just entered the game to pitch.
Charla Echols then hit the center to hit Skylar Wallace, giving the Gators a 2-1 lead after five innings.
The Noles retaliated again in the lead of the sixth scoring one run to tie the game.
Leonard again led the inning with a single.
She then advanced to second place on a wild pitch.
A single from Flaherty sent runners into the corners before Kalei Harding fired for shortstop, Leonard scoring and tying the game at two.
Neither team would score in the next three innings as the contest would go to the 10thth Inning.
Florida State has put the game wide open in the top 10th.
Sydney Sherrill led the inning with a solo home run into midfield, her second of the season.
With an out, Michaela Edenfield hit the left side.
Krystina Hartley got on the pinch run and advanced to third base after a Flaherty double. Harding would then hit a ball deep into midfield for a sacrificial fly while Hartley scored.
The 10th inning was the first time Florida State had scored multiple runs in an inning at Gainesville since 2013.
Danielle Watson started in circles for the Noles and pitched the first 4.1 innings, recording four strikeouts while conceding just one earned run.
Leonard pitched the middle 3.2 innings and now allowed a run as she hit three gator batters.
