All three field hockey champions of Section II reached the NYSPHSAA semifinals next weekend in their respective classifications with regional victories on Sunday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.
Shenendehowa defeated the previously undefeated Baldwinsville 2-0 in Class A after two goals from Molly Miller in the first quarter. Brianna Anslow made nine saves to secure the shutout for the Plainsmen (17-2 in total), who will face Mamaroneck in the state semi-finals at Centereach High School on Saturday.
Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake reached the Final Four of Class A with a 3-1 win over Holland Patent. Jocelyn Hild and Caroline Kogut each scored a goal and an assist for Burnt Hills, while Amelia Landry also scored the goal.
In Class C, Hoosick Falls advanced with a 3-2 win over Canastota. Emma McCart scored two goals and Gwyn Vincent scored once for Hoosick Falls.
SHENENDEHOWA WINS D1 SWIMMING TITLE
Shenendehowa scored just one event win with eighth grader Sophia Gao winning the 100-yard breaststroke, but it was more than enough to lift the deep plainsmen to a team win in their home pool at the Shenendehowa Aquatic Center in Section II Division 1 Swimming and diving championships for girls on Saturday.
Shenendehowa finished with 408 team points. Niskayuna finished second at 342, with Burnt Hills / Scotia (317) in third, Bethlehem (293) in fourth, and Saratoga Springs (197) rounding out the top 5 on a day that set a Section II record and several pool records have been broken.
Burnt Hills / Scotia won five events and got off to a phenomenal start when the quartet of Ally Frame, Kendall Gilbert, Tia Jack and Kaci Owens broke the 8-year Section II record in the 200-yard medley with a time of 1: 46.78.
Frame also won the 100 freestyles and 100 backstroke, setting a new pool record of 56.05 seconds, and Owens won the 50 freestyles. The Burnt Hills / Scotia team, comprised of Owens, Frame, Jami Fuson and Lucy Catalano, finished the 400 free relay with the Niskayuna team of Abby Lyons, Helen Hao, Isabel Nelson and Grace Roberts in a dead race.
Rachel Love of Saratoga Springs won both the 200 and 500 freestyles with a pool record of 4: 57.23 in the 500. Bethlehem’s Madeleine Ferreira was also a double winner in the 200 IM and 100 butterfly, with a pool record of 57, 60 in the latter event. Bethlehem also set a pool record in the 200 free relay of 1: 39.66 with the team of Madeleine Ferreira, Katherine Ferreira, Sarah Bernasconi and Hannah Fronheieser.
