Julia Child’s cooking shows are considered an integral part of American television history. The American cook, author and television presenter was recognized for bringing French gastronomy to the public with the publication of her cookbook. Master the French culinary art and with their tv shows like The French chef.
Child lived in a lovely house in Washington, DC, and that’s where all of her recipes for her books and shows came from. This incredible house was featured in the film Julie & Julia, with Meryl Streep, who tells the story of the chef’s life. The property is currently on the market for $ 3.5 million.
A kitchen full of history
Child began cooking her famous recipes in this house in 1956. Child also taught a group of women the French kitchen after remodeling the kitchen and installing a $ 400 Garland Model 182, which was a commercial gas range with a steel plate. The learned dishes included poaching eggs and sautéing chicken.
Today the kitchen has new Viking stainless steel appliances, an eight-burner ceramic hob, two deck ovens, a wood-burning fireplace and a temperature-controlled wine refrigerator. Most importantly, the owner kept the original kitchen wall from the childhood years, which means the kitchen still has the window that is shown on Child’s cooking shows.
In a traditional house
The beautiful yellow clapboard house in Georgetown was Childs home from 1948 until she moved in with her husband Paul Child in 1959 a decade later. The 19th century home was built by African American carpenter Edgar Murphy when the neighborhood was mostly black.
The house originally consisted of three bedrooms and three and a half bathrooms. The furnishings of the house also include exposed bricks and beams, an open floor plan on the first floor, which houses a spacious living room, an office, a foyer, a fireplace and a guest toilet. But the house has been renovated several times, which has gradually changed it.
