LEWIS: America needs Trump to break down the Washington establishment once and for all

Editor’s Note: Big Tent Ideas always aims to provide balanced perspectives on the hottest topics of the day. Below is a column arguing that Donald Trump’s America First agenda is exactly what America needs to defeat the Democrats in 2024, citing Liz Cheney’s recent defeat. A counterpoint is found here, where author Scott Johnston argues that the Republican Party has a much better choice than Trump.

You would have thought Liz Cheney’s shameful defeat in conservative Wyoming would seal the deal. But then again, the essence of gaslighting is repeating the lie ad infinitum. So no sooner had Harriet Hageman prevailed in a 37-point squeaker than the defeated Cheney (shouldn’t the media interview the winner?) told us it was Donald Trump still the problem.

The true poster child of neoconservatism was only the latest of the pro-impeachment Republicans who have been supplanted by an “America First” agenda. Only two out of ten survived. Which makes it clear that the former president doesn’t need to “move on” because the Republican Party has already done so. (RELATED: JOHNSTON: Why Donald Trump shouldn’t be our nominee)

But the “never-trumpers” keep looking for something, anything, that will finish him off. There have been two failed impeachment trials, Potemkin congressional hearings on Jan. 6, and ongoing efforts by partisan state officials to probe Trump’s financial records. Now comes an unprecedented one “ambushed” at his personal residence, apparently unlimited and on the most shaky legal basis.

What politician could survive that? Well, Donald Trump, I guess.

In fact, arming the “deep state” has only strengthened Trump’s grip on the GOP. More importantly, it has revealed the depths to which a dangerous cabal of anti-Trump forces will descend to thwart the will of the people. This is the essence of the “swamp” I saw in Washington, as a corrupt Justice Department along with the Clinton campaign and the mediaused fabricated evidence as a pretext to unseat a duly elected president.

Meanwhile, he covers the alleged cases of the Biden family “Pay-to-Play” programs.

It is evident that the obsession with Trump is so disturbingly disproportionate that it must hide ulterior motives. And it really is. No one since Ronald Reagan has threatened the status quo like Trump. People forget, but the establishment was firmly against Gipper by the early 1980s, even calling the former actor self-centered and too old to be president.

Now Trump is labeled “narcissistic” by people who think Bill Clinton and Barack Obama are humble.

And after four years of a senile President Joe Biden, the age issue might be a little hard to pin down. Also, if elected in 2024, he would only have one term to “let him snap,” and it’s highly unlikely Trump would let the likes of Anthony Fauci surround him this time. When you add it up, it’s exactly what the country needs.

Never before have our institutions been so completely taken over by state creeps as they are now. Parents are slandered by the press as “domestic terrorists” for opposing race-based classifications in schools. A cowardly American company has eagerly bowed to the “woke” ideology as long as they can continue to outsource manufacturing and get cheap labor from an open border.

After all, a bipartisan zealotry for regime change abroad has not only strained our men and women in uniform to the breaking point, but the “blowback” of these seemingly endless interventions has been so catastrophic that the only person who “should never come near” , the Oval Office is a Bush or a Cheney again.

Different times call for different leaders – and it seems that growing numbers of Americans are beginning to recognize just that.
