Oregon State Offensive vs. Washington Defense
It’s not much of a secret what Oregon State will do offensively. The beavers will get the UW defenses to stop the run. If not, it will be a long punishing night for the huskies. Statistically, Washington is underperforming this season as it ranks eighth in the conference at 4.46 yards per game. But it’s still early in the season, and UW has already played two high-quality running games in Michigan and California. Be careful that the huskies will not be able to cope with the attack. UW linebackers Jackson Sirmon and Edefuan Olofoshio are playmakers as together they make about 14 stops per game. The Huskies haven’t wreaked havoc in the backcourt like the last few UW units, having an average of 4.75 tackles for a loss and 1.75 sacks per game. Washington has one of the conference’s best pass defenses as it ranks # 2 in efficiency rating and third in yards per game. The Huskies will likely miss out on one of their best defensive backs in Trent McDuffie. Oregon State has an even attack despite 51 out of 70 games against USC. The beaver running game is led by an offensive line that has a total of 107 career starts. Center Nathan Eldridge was the Pac-12’s offensive lineman for the week following the USC mauling. Running back BJ Baylor has two 100-yard games and seven touchdowns this season. Quarterback Chance Nolan occupies fourth national place in the passer evaluation. He has become remarkably accurate, completing 72.3% of his passports (60 out of 83). Nolan threw four touchdown passes against the Trojans. The Beavers have eight receivers with at least five receptions this season. Bottom Line: Oregon State will let the ball run until UW slows the Beavers down. The huskies shouldn’t bring too many bodies into the barrel, because Nolan is a capable passer-by.
Defense of the state of Oregon vs. Washington offensive
The defensive performance of the Beavers was deviously good against USC. After OSU had given up a few points and running meters early on, he gave up in the middle of the game. There was a five-drive track where the Beavers only allowed one field goal. While Washington has no one on the offensive like USC recipient Drake London, the Huskies are starting to show life on the offensive and are nowhere near as dysfunctional as the Trojans. Freshman third year quarterback Dylan Morris threw a career high of 367 yards and three touchdowns against Arkansas State two weeks ago. The Beavers held Morris at 141 yards in their 27:21 loss in Seattle last year. Due to the COVID-19 protocol, Morris is unlikely to use Cade Otton’s services for all conferences. The huskies running game, which averages just 3.2 yards per carry, is led by Richard Newton. Statistically, Taj Davis is the UW’s best receiver with 19 catches for 257 yards and a touchdown. Terrell Bynum reaches an average of almost 18 meters per reception.
Oregon State ranks second in run defense, ninth in pass defense, and sixth in overall defense in Pac-12. The strength of the Beavers lies in the backfield, as they occupy third place in the conference in Tackles for Loss and Sacks. The insider linebacker duo Avery Roberts and Omar Speights are in the top 8 of the Pac-12 in tackles. The Beavers are much improved on the takeaways as they have 10 to four games and rank second in the conference on sales margin.
Match the note
The easiest is the OSU running game against Washington’s defense. But we go deeper and say Nolan vs. Husky Defense. It goes without saying that Washington will pull out all the stops to slow down the beavers’ running game. It might work, but at what cost? It’s up to Nolan to make UW pay if he over-emphasizes stopping the run. Can Nolan make some short, quick passes, keep the game action effective, and take some deep punches to loosen up the huskies? There is a feeling that this could be a showcase opportunity for the fourth year quarterback.
Oregon junior safety Jaydon Grant has two career touchdowns against Washington. Grant had a choice of six in 2019 and then returned a blocked punt for a touchdown last season.
This has been a mixed streak lately. Before Washington’s nine-game winning streak, Oregon State won seven of eight games from 2004 to 11.
Roxy Bernstein (Play-by-Play) and Lincoln Kennedy (Analyst) will name the game for FS1.
Baylor is the only Pac-12 that averages better than 100 yards per game. The Beavers junior is 105.3 yards per game.
Oregon State is looking for its first four-game winning streak since 2013.
The OSU record for passing yards against Washington is held by Beavers coach Jonathan Smith, who threw 469 yards in Seattle in 1998.
The Beavers have only given up one run over 20 yards this season (Zander Horvath, Purdue).
