Today, President Joseph R. Biden, Jr. declared the state of Alaska is facing a major disaster and ordered federal assistance to augment state, tribal and local recovery efforts in areas affected by a severe winter storm and straight-line winds December 25 through December 27, 2021.
State, tribal and eligible local governments and certain private non-profit organizations are receiving shared-cost federal funding for emergency work and the repair or replacement of facilities damaged by the severe winter storm and straight-line winds in Fairbanks North Star Borough, Denali Borough and the city of Nenana.
Federal funds are also available on a cost-sharing basis for state-wide security measures.
Deanne Criswell, Administrator, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Department of Homeland Security, appointed Thomas J. Dargan as Federal Coordinating Officer for Federal Recovery Operations in affected areas.
Additional evictions can be made at a later date if this is requested by the state and justified by the results of further damage assessments.
