We got good news today in our fight against COVID-19. The Food and Drug Administration has approved the Pfizer antiviral pill, a promising new treatment option that will significantly reduce hospital stays and deaths in the fight against the more highly transmissible variant of Omicron.
With today’s action we are adding the very first oral treatment to our country’s medicine cabinet and making a significant step forward on our way out of the pandemic.
As soon as emerging science showed the promise of this antiviral, we acted quickly and aggressively, buying 10 million treatment courses in advance – more than any other country in the world.
Considering that this pill will take time to manufacture due to the complex scientific process, production will ramp up in the coming months. We will have over 250,000 treatment courses available in January and we will work with states to ensure they are distributed fairly and fairly, and to reach our hardest hit communities.
Today’s action is a testament to the power of science and the result of American innovation and ingenuity. As Pfizer is working to manufacture these treatments as quickly as possible, we will work closely with them and provide all necessary resources, including using the Defense Production Act if warranted.
Even with the more highly transmissible variant of Omicron, America is more poised than ever to fight this virus. We have widespread vaccinations and booster vaccinations, testing and now one more effective treatment option that will help us save lives and further reduce the impact of COVID-19 on our country.
